Video Game Glitches - Useful or Just for Fun

Did you ever think a video game glitch could ever be helpful to you or society in general?  Just recently, a group of scientists found out just how useful a video game glitch could be.  In the fantasy role playing game called “World of Warcraft” they just recently experienced what would be similar to an epidemic on the game caused by a character named, Hakkar the Soulflayer, which infected other characters in the game with corrupted blood.

This scenario enabled researchers to study how people would react in this situation without actually having to experience a real epidemic.  They were able to monitor how quickly the epidemic spread and watch people's reactions; this particle game has 6.5 million players worldwide.  In the case of a real emergency, this could be useful to health professionals on how to handle disseminating this kind of information to the public.  Not all video game glitches have real world applications, but it's interesting to find one that does.

Another type of video game glitch is just for fun or to help you through the game.  One of the most famous glitches can be found in the Nintendo game called “Super Mario Bros,” which can be found by passing through a solid wall near the exit of World 1-2.  This allows the player to enter what is called the “Minus World” that resembles Worlds 2-2 and 7-2.  The only difference with this level is that upon completion of the level the warp pipe takes you back to the start of the level.  However, if you have the Japanese version, this glitch has three levels and upon completion of this level it takes you back to the title screen as if you won the game.
